Elevating Stones
These paintings are about stones from the mountains that have found a place in the town of Onishi and within the homes of the people. Walking around the Japanese town, it is fascinating to discover repeated instances of mountain stones that have been raised above the ground by being placed on top of common household objects which unwittingly become pedestals. The combination of the two elements (resulting in found sculptures) offer functional, aesthetic, and cultural properties to contemplate. These paintings, installed in the proximity of a shrine, dwell on the significance of stone in cultures and highlights the potency of existing stones in Onishi today where the mining and sale of mountain stones were once its main local industry.
